The Dark Forest part 11: What Morax saw

An old and dying race from another world made attempts to join the humans in their population of a new world. However, the humans slaughtered the incoming Seaceans and destroyed their gate, and thus those that entered from the other side emerged in the negative realm of that world. Over half of their race entered the doorway in hopes of resurfacing in the promised land, only to emerge in a cold, dark, silent hell. The few that made it onto the other side before the door was destroyed were lucky, they made it to the world of mortals, and their souls made it to the afterlife.

Those that ended up in the negative void of that world turned cannibal and killed each other to survive for as long as they could. Their souls trapped forevermore in that place. The last one to come through the doorway

was the great wizard who lead the project to create the doorway, Esos. He went insane in the realization that he somehow made a mistake and damned his entire race. He began to search for a sort of door to the outside realm, and not too long after searching, he found the great abysmal gates, but he could not open them. 

With all the time in the world, he eventually devised a spell, which would assimilate souls into a mass of energy that would be used to open the gates. Over two thirds of the souls trapped there were used in the spell, so that they could open the gates and take over the new world. The spell used almost all of the souls, and fractured the gates, but did not open them, Asos was shunned, and carried the remaining glowing mass of souls as a lantern to roam the dark forest for several hundred years, until one night (sorry, it's always night, they lose track of time that way), three new mortals entered their realm.
